Learning About Technology
Now that I am in Thebes I get to learn about what kind of technology they have!!!
Calendar

The first thing that I learned they invented was the first 365 day calendar and a Leap Year. It was invented in 238 B.C. They were able to invent this thing due to astronomy. A solar system established calendar, based on twelve months of 30 days each, with five extra days, was first conceived of by the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians also devised the leap year calendar of adding an extra day every fourth year in the year 238 B.C. We use this kind of calendar today, it helps us keep track of what day it is and what year! (D)
Hieroglyphics

The next thing that I learned that was invented during ancient egypt times was a special kind of writing called hieroglyphics. These painstakingly drawn symbols were great for decorating the walls of temples but for conducting day to day business. Hieroglyphics was invented around 3000 B.C. Hieroglyphics were very important to Ancient Egyptians because it helped them with decorating and doing day to day business. This type of writing is not used today but our writing system evolved from hieroglyphics. (D)
Papyrus
![Picture](/uploads/2/5/7/2/25722315/1931037.jpg)
The third thing that I learned they invented was papyrus which is sort of like a piece of paper. Something it had in common with paper is that they are both used to write on. Of course papyrus was made out of a different material than paper. The papyrus plant is a reed that grows in marshy areas around the Nile river and then the plant was manufactured into a writing material like paper. This was a huge thing for ancient egyptians because writing on papyrus was the most efficient way to write. We don't use papyrus today but the only reason why we have paper today is because of papyrus. (D)
Black Ink

The fourth thing I learned that they invented was black ink. Black ink was invented around 2500 B.C. Egyptians made a mix consisting of vegetable gum, soot and bee wax to be able to make the black ink. The pen was a simple reed, fashioned at the tip into a tiny brush. This black ink was very important because it was the most efficient thing during there time period. We use ink in our everyday life. We use ink in pens, and we need pens to write. (E)
Medicine
![Picture](/uploads/2/5/7/2/25722315/6875206.png)
The last invention I learned about was Ancient Egyptian medicine. The Ancient Egyptians had a wide variety of medicines and cures. Some of there medicines very, very unique. For example, they used honey and human brains to cure eye infections. They also used a whole cooked mouse to help cure coughs. Many of their medicines were accompanied by spells toward off the evil spirits making the person sick. Medicine was important because it helped cure the sick people. We use medicine today for the same reason as they did; to cure us when we are sick. (F)
CEE Paragraph
The Ancient Egypt society was very advanced, they had many things that helped them with there advanced society though. "The Ancient Egyptians attained very high levels of medicine, science and art." They had high level medicines to cure the sick people in an efficient way. High level of science helped them invent the 365 day calendar, because of astronomy we have calendars today. Art attained very high levels; an example of it is decorating tombs with paint. Without the decorations we might not know about the ancient egyptians. "We may think of ancient cultures as being primitive. This is not always true. The ancient Egyptians were an advanced society." This was because they had a very advanced form of mathematics and technology. This is part of there mathematics: a heel stood for 10, a crook was 100, 1000 was a flower, a finger represented 10,000, and a tadpole represented 100,000. They knew how addition, subtraction, and fractions worked. And this was the same time as Ancient Mesopotamia. Mesopotamians only knew shapes not addition, subtraction, and fractions. There technology was extremely advanced, they had black ink and papyrus while the Mesopotamians were using stylus's and clay tablets. "Scarabs, mummies, obelisks, sphinxes—their civilization was extraordinary and yet so "other" from what we live today." They were so advanced they were able to build Scarabs, mummies, obelisks, and Sphinxes. They had to use many advanced tools and manual labor to build those things. Ancient Egypt was one of the most advanced societies in that time period.

I received my next clue that said, Go to Nubia to learn about the Egyptian government and how it works!"
